The clients came to us with a house that had run out of room for the way their family actually lives. Three growing kids, no upstairs, no real workspace, no place to put the crafts, the games, the gear, the guests. On paper it was a single-story home. In practice it was a house asking every space to do a job it wasn’t built for. What the family wanted was ambitious but grounded: a home that could hold all the versions of their life at once, work, school, hobbies, hosting, without feeling like it had been added onto in pieces.

We started downstairs, where a custom built-in system became what we came to call the brain of the home, everything from board games to gaming consoles to craft supplies finally in one intentional place. A three-person desk gave each child their own square footage to work side by side, together but not on top of each other. Upstairs, we added a true flex room, a transformer of a space where custom cabinetry, layered lighting, and a Murphy bed let it move quietly between gym, sewing studio, office, and guest suite depending on what the week called for. The adjoining bathroom leans into a moody mid-century direction with a curbless shower, integrated storage, and rich layered finishes that feel dramatic and welcoming at once. And tucked beneath the new staircase, in a corner that could have easily been drywalled shut, we built a small hidden nook for the kids. It became their favorite room in the house almost immediately, a quiet reminder that the best design often lives in the spaces no one thought to ask for.
