Legacy Loft

The clients came to us with more than a design brief. They came with a decision. The husband’s parents were relocating from New Mexico to Texas to be closer to family, and what the couple wanted was a home that could hold two generations at once, close enough for daily connection, private enough that everyone still felt like themselves. Once we opened up the existing playroom and garage, we found a previous conversion that had been done without permits and was no longer safe or code-compliant. Patching it wasn’t an honest option, so we started over.

We rebuilt from the ground up: a code-compliant garage, a downstairs flex space for the grandchildren, and an entirely new second-story apartment for the grandparents with an open kitchen and living area, a private balcony over the pool, a workout room, bedroom, and accessible bath and laundry. Because the grandfather lives with Multiple Sclerosis, accessibility drove nearly every decision, but never the aesthetic. ADA features are folded into the design rather than layered on top, so the space supports independence without ever feeling clinical. What we love most isn’t a room. It’s the rhythm the grandkids drifting upstairs for snacks, puzzles landing on the kitchen table, two floors quietly becoming one household. What started as an addition turned into a bridge between generations.
